I married into a Cuban family over twenty years ago. My in-laws speak very minimal English. For the past twenty years, there’s been a language barrier placed between us. As you can imagine, this can be extremely frustrating sometimes. Many times, only small talk and jokes are understood through facial expressions and hand gestures.

Facebook Messaging App Adds Real Time Translations

I discovered something awesome last week. I posted items on Facebook MarketPlace. First off, because I’m not a hoarder. Second off, I have a rich history with craigslist and classified marketplaces. A gentleman with an extremely foreign name popped up on my Messenger with a message written in Spanish. Immediately, I assumed this transaction wasn’t going to work out. I had absolutely no idea what he was attempting to say. To my surprise, I found a translate button easily accessible right on Messenger. Due to this translation feature, we corresponded, and he came and purchased a few of the items. Without this feature, doing business with this potential buyer would’ve been impossible or at least the process would’ve been way too inconvenient to consider pursuing. Just when I was going to turn away this pleasant consumer, Facebook saved the day for both of us. The convenience of a translate button right on the Messenger app made me willing and able to do commerce with this man.

Facebook is on their way to bridging the communication gap by implementing this translate option. It allows people to converse in a way that is natural and easygoing. As of now, Messenger is the only platform carrying this feature and it only translates between English and Spanish. This feature, called M’s translation suggestions, initially was created for buyers and sellers in Marketplace but can be utilized in your Messenger app now. This feature is available to those in the US or Mexico. While this feature is currently limited, Facebook intends to open up this feature to many other languages and make it available in other countries as well.

M’s translation suggestion is expanding the opportunities for small businesses. Small businesses can now expand their clientele. The communication barrier on Facebook is no longer existent. I am extremely pleased to see such an impactful feature implemented on their platform.

Facebook Messenger Assistant M Can Now Translate French

From here on out, I can exercise commerce with someone who strictly speaks Spanish language. I’m ecstatic that I can now communicate with my in laws through Facebook Messenger. The need for our messages to have a human translator, mostly my daughters to this point, is no more. After many years hoping for a technology to close this gap, it’s here.
